Grammarly Review: Is Grammarly as good as they claim?

Grammarly is a grammar checking tool which has excellent options. We usually would say that all the word processing tools have a grammar tool inbuilt into it. So, is Grammarly the most accurate grammar checker? Is it worth spending money on this?

I started using Grammarly a few years back, and this was surely a turning point for a person like me, who makes many typos. As a blog writer and a Life coach, the articles that I write cannot have any errors — this is essential for the work that I do.

Before I start writing the features and the abilities of Grammarly, I would like to say that the word processor grammar tool checks the spelling; however, they cannot put in punctuation, correct the grammar, and also give suggestions on which tone I need to set the work based on my requirements. These are just some of the features that you get when you use the professional version of Grammarly.

In this article, I would be doing the review on Grammarly Premium Version and not a trial version; the Trial Version has excellent features with limitations. The Premium version, on the other hand, is a product that enhances your writing skills. For me, it was an increase from 60 % accuracy to 98 % Accuracy.

Features of Grammarly:-

Grammar and punctuation: Grammarly is not just a simple product that checks a few lines and then gives us an option with not much of suggestions, but it gives these plus it also gives several guidelines on how to solve the issues.

Spell Check: The spell check for Grammarly has an extensive collection of spellings; this enables you to write mistake-free.

Plagiarism: Grammarly uses the inbuilt plagiarism tool to check the web and compare your article with the web contents to detect if your work is genuine or is copied from somewhere.

Writing Style: It helps you self-edit your work by providing real-time insights about your readability score, sentence-length, which is very important while writing blogs. It is beneficial for adapting your genre-specific writing style for your niche crowd.

Who should use Grammarly?

  • Bloggers
  • Content marketers and copywriters
  • Authors
  • Academicians
  • Business professionals for presentations, email, or social media posts.
  • Students ( Research papers, thesis, Project work and any article that you write )

The best part about Grammarly is it is a fantastic proofreading tool that detects and enhances the writeup that you have made. It is proved that there is a marked improvement in your reader’s perspective if the grammar, punctuation, and sentence construction is formed correctly.

Grammarly can understand not just American English but also Canadian English, British English, Australian English, and more, all this at the same time. So, you don’t have to worry about using one set of rules at a time.

Grammarly also suggests the best sentence formation, keeping the sentence short and simple to understand.

The premium version is straightforward to procure as you could go ahead and do the subscription monthly or annually, so if you are going to use it during report submission time, you could use it and then cancel it after the work is done. The renewal process is simple, so anytime you want, you can start and pause it.

Usage of Grammarly:-

The free version is available online, and you could download it from the link below.

Once you have the free version, use it, and check out the features. You have various options to install Grammarly.

You can use several different proofreading apps, including:

  • Grammarly desktop app for Mac
  • Grammarly desktop app for Windows
  • Grammarly MS Office add-in
  • A Grammarly Chrome web app that works much like Google Docs
  • A Grammarly Chrome plugin
  • Grammarly for iOS
  • Grammarly for Android

I usually use Grammarly as a standalone product and do my writing on Word for Windows or some other document writers and then go-ahead and paste the matter into Grammarly and do complete proofreading. Earlier I used to use a Macbook pro, and there I used to use Grammarly for Mac.

I have personally used all the plugins and they all work. All the features are enabled for all versions, and that gives the flexibility to do work across platforms. Being a blog and content writer, I need this flexibility for all my work to be checked before publishing.

I also use the Grammarly Chrome extension to check shorter pieces of writing, like emails and potentially embarrassing social media posts.

Grammarly keyboard for mobile devices is a free tool and can be used for all writing and posting apps and web pages. With this, you can enable Grammarly checking on most apps on your phone automatically – which makes creating mistake-free text and documents a breeze.

As I was writing this review, I used Grammarly and set the goals:

Audience – Expert, Formality – Formal, Domain – Technical, Tone- Confident, Intent – Describe.

The output of the Intended goal was, Grammarly checked my Goals and accordingly told me to change the tone of writing a couple of times. I have attached the report that Grammarly gave me in the end. This not just enabled me to be good in my writing skills, it also helped me to improve my writing skills. Grammarly helped me identify:

  • Confused prepositions
  • Asked me to change the passive voice to active voice.
  • It reduced Wordy sentences to smaller ones making it readable
  • Repetitive words have been removed
  • Common writing and grammar mistakes like misplaced apostrophes
  • Spelling errors
  • Any other grammar rules that I may have overlooked

Can Grammarly replace Human Proofreading?

The evolution of AI and tools like Grammarly always gives rise to the question if it is a replacement to humans. My answer to that question will be it still has a long way to go.

Language is not just a set of rules and not static. Language has been evolving since time immemorable; having said this, I will say that the rules and grammar checking that this tool is made for achieves excellent results. When it comes to writing there is a set of creativity that the writer is bound to get in. Grammarly overlooked several mistakes, particularly in my creative writing.

This limitation is also taken care of by the company; they have added a feature that enables human proofreading. I have not tried this feature and could not find it in the latest version of the app.

Effectiveness of Grammarly:-

Grammarly is a great product, and I would rate it a 9 out of 10 on the scale.

This does not mean that someone without an understanding of basic English can use Grammarly to write a perfect article. Grammarly is an assistant, not the writer. The material and the format of writing depend on the writer and not the assistant.

Grammarly Premium :-

If you’ve read this far into this review of Grammarly, my answer is yes, but If you’re a writer on a budget, install the free Chrome browser extension(they have Extensions for Safari, Firefox, and other platforms also) and test it for yourself.

The Grammarly online editor will help you check for grammar, punctuation, and spelling mistakes faster.
